One of the most famous liqueurs of any variety in the world, this the traditional Italian almond liqueur.

According to the Disaronno company, the liqueur was created some time prior to 1525, when it was given by a youthful widow to the artist Bernardino Luini, who was working at da Vinci’s studio at the time. The widow was a model for Luini, who used her for his portrait of Mary, which is on view at Saronno’s Chapel of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Apparently, the liqueur was the family recipe of the young woman concerned, but commercial production did not begin until the 1700s.

Despite its strong nutty flavour, Disaronno contains no almond at all, instead the flavour is created through an infusion of apricot pits with alcohol, burnt sugar and 17 different botanicals.

The final result is a fragrant liqueur with notes of citrus, marzipan, mixed spice, toasted almond and woody apricot.

A must have for every bar, this is a vital ingredient in the famous Amaretto Sour.
